Indiana Boy Rushed To Emergency Room After Swallowing 27 Magnets
While the incident occurred in September, the parents of an Indiana boy, who was rushed to an emergency room after swallowing 27 magnets, are speaking out to increase awareness about the dangers of consuming magnets.
Jessica MacNair, mother to then-4-year-old Peyton — who has autism, recounts making an emergency trip to the hospital after Peyton swallowed 27 magnets, two of which ended up stuck to the sides of his uvula. MacNair says Peyton’s stepfather stepped out for a few minutes to make a call and when he returned, Peyton was crying, adding that something was stuck in his throat.

MacNair says thanks to an episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ she was able to “realize the dangers of swallowing magnets, [and how] they could tear through tissue and the body.” She adds, “It can happen to anyone and it can happen in a split second.” Dr. Michael Foreman, a gastroenterologist who treated Peyton, adds, “These neodymium magnets, even if they are small, they can be really powerful. They can end up giving you a hole in your bowel and that is the worst-case scenario. That can be devastating and result in surgery or resection.” Fortunately, doctors acted quick and besides feeling a little sore the next day, Peyton was doing great.
