Sajneev Prasad,61, and his wife Sadhana,57, filed court documentation after stating their son, Shrey Sagar, caused them ‘mental agony’ for failing to produce grandchildren. Sagar married his wife Shubhangi and their wedding was fully paid for by his parents including their honeymoon to Thailand. The marriage was reportedly arranged but the retired couple claims their son and daughter-in-law have been living separately.

“I gave my son all my money, got him trained in America. I don’t have any money now. We have taken a loan from bank to build home. We’re troubled financially& personally. We have demanded Rs 2.5 cr each from both my son & daughter-in-law in our petition: SR Prasad, Father”

Prasad claims they gifted the couple an Audi and paid for their wedding reception at a five-star hotel. Additionally, they said they’ve spent 25 million rupees on Shrey since birth. “We killed our dreams to raise him. It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. We had been waiting for years to become grandparents,” Prasad explained.

“My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby. At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable.”

The couple says they also took out a loan to pay for their housing expenses due to financial hardships. However, the ultimatum is that their son and daughter-in-law produce a grandchild or pay up for the money spent for their nuptials in addition to living expenses.

Court officials said the petition will be reviewed in a hearing at a court in northern India as reported by the Daily Mail. After the hearing, Shrey and Shubhangi will be contacted about the case.

Twitter reactions to the unconventional case

A lot of Twitter users caught wind of the case and feel like the retired couple is doing the most for wanting a grandchild. However, some believe that it’s due to traditional values that the couple expects a grandchild immediately from their son.
