Illinois Woman Found COVID-19 Biohazard Bag In Kohl’s Package

Andrea Ellis, an Illinois woman, alerted authorities after she found a COVID-19 biohazard bag with test specimen inside her Kohl’s package. As Ellis was wrapping Christmas gifts at her aunt’s home in East Moline (northwestern Illinois), she opened a padded envelope which contained the flags she ordered for her grandmother’s garden, in addition to another envelope inside.

Ellis says, “I pulled out the flags and I told my aunt, ‘Look how cute these are.’ I pulled out the packing slip and then noticed something deeper inside the envelope and pulled that out. It was a biohazard bag containing someone’s COVID-19 test specimen.” Inside the bag was a used nasal swab and identifying information of a person from Virginia.

On Monday, Wisconsin-based Kohl’s issued a statement, they apologized, “this very unusual and inexplicable experience.” They added that the package was sent from an “outside direct ship vendor” not directly from one of their facilities. An investigation has since been launched.
