Illinois Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Teen At Traffic Stop Fired

Earlier this week, a Waukegan teen was fatally shot by a police officer during a routine traffic stop. The police officer has been fired for violating multiple policies and procedures.

According to NBC Chicago, the unnamed police officer was immediately fired days after the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Marcellis Stinnette. Stinnette was shot on Tuesday while sitting in the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s car. His girlfriend, identified as 20-year-old Tafara Williams, was injured during the shooting.

Local reports state the officer approached Williams’ vehicle after it started to move in reverse and he claimed he started shooting at the vehicle in “self-defense.” Investigators say there were no weapons in the couple’s vehicle.

An internal investigation will be conducted by state police and the case will be reviewed by the Lake County State Attorney’s Office. The FBI will also be involved in the investigation as confirmed by FBI Special Agent Siobhan Johnson.

“The FBI is aware of the death of Marcellis Stinnette and will review all available facts of the incident to determine if a federal response is warranted,

Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump will also represent Williams in the case as he has done so for Jacob Blake, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor’s families.
