Ice Spice is booked and busy out here as she covers the latest issue of PAPER magazine, but it’s what she told the publication that’s bound to leave a lot of people talking. There’s no denying that since landing her breakout hit with “Munch,” last summer, this Bronx rapper has become one of the hottest female rappers in the music industry. Some people have even gone as far as to claim that some of the other female lyricists have been inspired by her, saying that some of their new songs are sounding very much like Ice Spice.

What appears to have made her stand out from the rest is that her music doesn’t sound like everybody else’s — and Ice Spice acknowledges that in her interview with the mag. “I don’t know if I fit in. I think that’s what makes me so different,” she said. “I feel like it’s a new lane that I’ve started, and I’m starting to hear a lot of other artists sound like they belong in my lane now.” While she didn’t mention any names, there’s been a few female rappers who have been accused of switching up their music to sound similar to the 23-year-old. “Munch” hasn’t even been out for a year and Ice Spice has completely dominated not just the music industry but pop culture in general, having signed on for several lucrative endorsement deals as she continues to expand her ever-growing brand. In the interview, she also recalled the moment she knew she was on to big things when people started recognizing her on the street. “I remember I was in the mall and this little group of kids swarmed around me like, ‘Are you the ‘Munch’girl? Oh my God.’ And that was the first week ‘Munch’ had came out,” she said.

“So real shortly after that, that’s when I started to realize my fame was picking up and people was constantly coming up to me. I started to know gradually. It’s not like one day, you’re like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m famous.’ At some point, any time you step out the car, instantly people know you, instantly screaming your name.”

While promoting her music at clubs is a great way to promote herself, Ice Spice admits that she’s not necessarily fond of those kinds of performances having seen how hectic and somewhat dangerous things can get at times. “I started to not want to really perform at clubs as much because it started to feel a little scary performing in a club versus performing on a stage. I’m not saying I’ll never do them again, but I’ll do it when it makes sense.”

She also touched on people criticizing her music, to which she said, “I would say I am a critic of myself, but the second other people start to critique me, I instantly become my biggest supporter and I’m like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, not too much.’”
