A father of five daughters in the Uttar Pradesh region in India ripped open his pregnant wife’s stomach to see if she was having a baby boy.

Authorities reported the 41-year-old man attacked his wife with a sickle-shaped object on Saturday evening in their Nepkur home to find out the baby’s gender. The 35-year-old woman, identified as Anita Devi, is said to be six to seven months pregnant at the time of the attack. Devi’s brother, Ravi Kumar, said the man had abusive behavior and assaulted her on several occasions for giving birth to five daughters and the weapon-related attack occurred after a priest told the couple that their sixth child would also be a girl.
“My brother-in-law used to beat up my sister often for giving birth to five daughters. Even my parents tried to resolve the problem, but no one had ever imagined that he would take such a cruel step.”

Other sources say the attack occurred during an argument between the couple after Devi refused to get an abortion. Her condition is currently listed as critical and she was transported to another hospital to receive treatment for severe chest and stomach injuries.
It is unclear if the unborn baby survived the attack but police are currently investigating the attack with Devi’s family.
