A daycare owner’s husband, who was shot by his wife when she learned he was allegedly sexually molesting the children at the center, has been released from police custody to home detention.

As we previously reported, 50-year-old Shanteari Weems went off when she found out about her husband’s alleged actions. At the Mandarin Oriental in southwest D.C. in July 2022, Weems confronted her husband, James S. Weems Jr., about his inappropriate behavior with the children attending her Baltimore center. Things escalated, and when the altercation became physical, Weems pulled out the 9mm handgun she brought for protection and fired it. Police records show Weems Jr. sustained injuries to his neck and leg.

According to Bossip, Weems Jr. was charged with many crimes, including 13 counts related to three victims, two counts of a third-degree sex offense, three counts of second-degree assault and one count of displaying obscene material to a minor. Weems is currently serving a 4-year sentence for shooting her husband.

As we previously reported, Police arrived at the room around 7:40 p.m. at the Mandarin Oriental after responding to a call about a man shot on the 8th floor. The woman, identified as 50-year-old Shanteari Weems, didn’t allow officers to enter the room and told them she would shoot herself if they attempted to come in. During the confrontation, officers asked Weems if there was a shooting victim in her room, and she replied, “he’s a child molester.” The male shooting victim said he was shot in the leg after police detained Weems.

Weems explained to investigators that she and her husband had been married for five years and lived together in Baltimore. She learned about the molestation accusations against her husband after several children from her daycare, Lil Kidz Kastle, told her he was molesting them. Weems reported her husband to the authorities in Baltimore. Her husband is a retired Baltimore City police officer.

Officers also said they found two guns in the room and letters from Weems apologizing to the children for her husband’s actions. On the daycare’s Facebook page, their motto is to serve the community and respond to the needs, interests and priorities of parents and children.
