A neighbor who spoke to the media outlet KREX revealed that a woman and her son used to live in the house together before moving out recently. The neighbor mentioned that they had packed their desired items on Friday, leaving behind a pile of discarded goods. The neighbor also shared that the lady who purchased the house had posted online, inviting people to come and take the free items. According to the neighbor, a man present at the time of the discovery claimed to be there to collect a deep freezer that had been left behind. The freezer allegedly contained frozen animal meat. However, as they were removing the freezer, a black bag fell out, revealing a human head.

Authorities were seen removing several other bags from the property, although the contents of these bags remain unknown. Wendy Likes from the Sheriff’s Office stated that no further details can be released now. She emphasized the importance of not spreading rumors or speculation that could potentially cause distress to loved ones who may be unaware of their family member’s passing. The Sheriff’s Office believes this incident is isolated and does not threaten the community, as reported by TOO FAB.

The Sheriff’s Office provided an update, stating that further testing is required before any definitive answers can be provided. They acknowledged that these tests can take significant time and requested patience from the public as the investigation continues. Their main goal is to identify the victim while respecting them and their family positively:

“The autopsy by the Mesa County Coroner’s Office occurred yesterday and has confirmed the human remains found at the address on Pinyon Avenue on January 12, 2024, are a human head and human hands.  At this time, we have no other definitive answers until further testing can be completed.  These types of tests take a significant amount of time, and again, we ask for patience from the public as this investigation continues. A thorough and detailed investigation is the top priority of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.  Our hope is to positively identify the victim while remaining respectful of the victim and the victim’s family.”
