One thing about Tiffany Haddish, she’s going to make her presence known and she sure did that at the MTV Video Music Awards.
In case you missed it, the energetic comedian was filmed trying to get Shakira’s attention as the Vanguard Award recipient made her way backstage. In a now-viral clip, Haddish could be seen spotting the singer from across the room. Haddish then repeatedly shouts “Shakira, Shakira” while trying to get close to the Colombian icon.
Shakira was surrounded by her team and did not
appear to hear or acknowledge the actress. However, eventually, Haddish made her way to the singer, who then posed on the pink carpet for photographs. Pictures shared online show the “Night School” actress photobombing the 46-year-old while she was having her picture taken. While it seemed like a pretty awkward moment, Tiffany Haddish is letting us know it was all love at the end of the day. In an exclusive statement to Hollywood Unlocked, Haddish shared the sweet exchange they had after she chased her down and what exactly was going through her mind when she was doing it: “I was thinking she has an album about to drop, I have a single out… Let me ask her if we can do a song or if I can be in a music video,” Haddish said, adding “These hips don’t lie.”

The 43-year-old went on to say, “I knew she wouldn’t look if I said her name like that. And when she saw it was me it was all hugs and ‘You would do my video Tiffany really?’ I Love that lady.”

Either way, it was a great night for both ladies. Shakira pertinent and accepted her Vanguard award. She also shared a heartwarming speech while on stage: “Thank you, MTV. Thank you for being such a big part of my career since I was only 18 years old,” Shakira said to start her acceptance speech during Tuesday’s show. “Tonight, I want to thank people who have played a key role in my visual history.”
Haddish also served as a presenter that night and gave Selena Gomez and Rena their award for Best Afrobeats.
Haddish has gotten into the music space herself and recently dropped a new song and music video titled “Till The Club Closes.” It features Lil Jon, Fivio Foreign, and Begetz with a special guest appearance by Hollywood Unlocked’s very own, Jason Lee.”
