This year, Rihanna was honored with the President’s Award which is given in recognition of special achievements and distinguished public service that she does not only in the US but all around the world.

While on the carpet, we spoke with H.E.R., Brie Larson, Dj Envy, Diggy Simmons, and more.

During the show, we were able to catch up with some of the winners including Jamie Foxx who won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in “Just Mercy,” Angela Bassett, who won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “9-1-1,” Lizzo who won Entertainer of the Year and Rihanna following her amazing acceptance speech.

“I’m going to try to keep this simple because tonight is not really about me because the purpose is bigger than me, right? It’s not bigger than us together, but it’s bigger than me because my part is a very small part of the work that’s being done in this world — and the work that is yet to be done.

“I’m lucky I was able to start the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012 And if there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together. We can’t do it divided. I cannot emphasize that enough.

She ended her speech by saying;

“So when we’re marching and protesting and posting about the Michael Brown Juniors and the Atatiana Jeffersons of the world, tell your friends to pull up.”

Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP also released a statement sharing that Rihanna had received the award for not only her “groundbreaking career as an artist and musician,” but also for being a “stellar public servant.”
“From her business achievements through Fenty to her tremendous record as an activist and philanthropist, Rihanna epitomizes the type of character, grace, and devotion to justice that we seek to highlight in our President’s Award,” he said.
