Have you ever opted for a meme over conventional text? If so, you’re part of a growing community of meme enthusiasts influencing pop culture and reinventing digital communication as we know it.

A potent tool for discourse, both online and offline, memes put an easy-to-understand — and often humorous — spin on everything from current events to social justice issues.

But just how widespread are memes? Studies have found that a whopping 75% of people aged 13 to 36 share memes. But that’s not all. Adults meme, too, and 71% of all who do say it helped them find and connect with like-minded people.

And, with the emergence of powerful tools like Memix, which takes mere seconds to create personalized memes, the number of people creating and sharing memes is set to soar even higher.

Pop culture meets meme culture

Twenty-two years ago, in the time before broadband, ABC premiered a new series, Dot Comedy, where celebrity hosts reacted to funny internet videos. The show got cancelled after one episode after receiving poor ratings, and pundits concluded that internet videos just weren’t meant for television.

Boy, were they wrong! Meme evolved alongside the internet, transforming from an underground form of humor to a mainstream cultural phenomenon.

Yes, memes are a culture now; gone are the days when they were just a staple of social interaction on social media and internet forums. Today, they’re everywhere — in music, movies, television, literature, sports, and more — all at once!

The meme culture expanded so far so fast that marketing experts had to study it, and their findings were astonishing: memes had ten times more reach with 60% organic engagement, obliterating regular marketing graphics.

What’s more, 60% of people said they would be more inclined to buy stuff from companies using memes. With statistics like that, no wonder the biggest names in business are memeing.

The far-reaching impact of meme culture has also disrupted traditional social hierarchy, elevating ordinary people to stardom and bolstering the celebrities we already know and love.

In late 2022, netizens decided that this scene from 2001’s “Zoolander” — a comedy classic that satirized the modeling world — provided the perfect meme template for the unlikeliest of everyday scenarios. And thus, a new meme was born.

57-year-old Ben Stiller, who played Derek Zoolander in the film, marveled at the development as he told NBC that his daughter had shown him TikTok videos of the trending meme.

When memes are not transcending time to disrupt modern pop culture further — as we’ve seen in Zoolander’s case — they’re defining the way we communicate online.

“Memes don’t sit in sub forums and Subreddits; they crop up in group chats and on your local diner’s Instagram account,” wrote Kaitlyn Tiffan, internet culture writer for The Atlantic.

Indeed, with memes setting the large swathes of trends in the digital landscape, its usage is not expected to devolve into a fad anytime soon. The global meme industry was valued at $2.3 billion in 2020 and is set to grow to $6.1 billion by 2025.
So widely used are memes in virtual interaction that social media giant Instagram, which started out as a platform for sharing photos, in February 2023 rolled out an update that its users share GIFs.

Given memes’ undisputed position as a formative part of public discourse, it quickly became imperative for many to know how to meme.

Memix: a new, fast way to meme

In today’s world of fast-moving trends, very few people are willing to fire up digital media manipulation software and spend hours in front of a screen to create a meme.

But on Memix, a new breed of meme-making apps that uses the power of generative AI to create and share personalized GIF memes, this otherwise hours-long process takes just seconds.

Memix allows users to choose from a pool of thousands of meme templates or upload their own images, input their text of choice, and watch their memes spring to life.

Users can then instantly deploy their new memes to the comment section as Memix integrates seamlessly with messaging apps like Discord, Facebook Messenger, IRL, WhatsApp, etc.

Abraham Shafi, the founder of social messaging app IRL and Memix, acknowledged the ascension of memes to a global language on chat spaces the world over. “Memes have become the universal language,” he said. “And now absolutely anybody can be fluent.”

In the r/meme subreddit — arguably Reddit’s biggest collective of meme users, boasting over 25 million meme enthusiasts — memes generated with Memix have been shared thousands of times, showcasing the app’s impact in the broader meme culture and its role in shaping the direction of internet humor.

Shafi is evangelical about the role Memix plays in democratizing meme-making and making it accessible to everyone regardless of technical know-how.

“Before Memix, even if you had the perfect idea for a meme, you had to hunt down a template, or hit up your meme-genius friend. It was too much work for the average person,” he said.

He also believes Memix will revolutionize how memes are created, shared, and consumed, paving the way for a new era of meme culture.

“Memix is a pure expression of that vision. Helping people articulate their freshest jokes, or their deepest-held emotions, with people they care about through the medium of memes,” Shafi said.
