The incident happened at Lamar High School, where the footage shows the 15-year-old male student arguing with a teacher who reportedly took their cell phone. Seconds later, the student punches the teacher in the face. Witnesses were stunned by the attack and screamed as the student continued to throw more punches, and the video was cut off. Texas American Federation of Teachers president Zeph Capo said in a statement that the student shouldn’t be allowed back on campus as his behavior shouldn’t be tolerated.

“By all means, he should not be allowed back on a regular campus. This is not something that needs to be tolerated. Unfortunately, we see too much of this,” Capo said.  “We see too much of this happening toward our teachers and toward our school employees,” he said to KHOU.

The outlet also said during the 2021-2022 school year, there were 520 incidents involving assaults against staff members. Capo said he’s experienced students throwing desks and times when some students only expressed angry reactions in the classroom. However, he says he’s never been attacked in an alternative school.

A note was sent home to parents about the incident. It says the behavior will not be tolerated as administrators are looking at strategies to prevent further incidents in the future. The student nor the teacher commented on the incident.

Social media and parents reacted to the incident and believed the school’s administration should take violent matters seriously when a staff member is involved in a physical altercation.
