House Republicans remove Rep. Liz Cheney from Leadership Job Over Trump Criticism — Vows to “do everything I can to ensure Trump never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office”

On Wednesday, House Republicans ousted Rep. Liz Cheney from her post as the chamber’s No. 3 GOP leader, punishing her after she repeatedly rebuked former President Donald Trump; not only for his false claims of election fraud but also for his role in fomenting the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. To note, Cheney also voted to impeach Trump.

As the Associated Press reports, as chair of the GOP House Conference, the three-term Wyoming congresswoman had been the third most powerful Republican member of the House. She’s also the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. She has refused to stop criticizing Trump over his poor leadership and also signaled after the conference meeting that she intended to use her overthrow to try pointing the party away from the former president.

“I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” she told reporters.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he supports replacing Cheney with New York Rep. Elise Stefanik. Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he supported Cheney.

“Liz has committed the only sin of being consistent and telling the truth. The truth is that the election was not stolen. 74 million voters were not disenfranchised — they were just outnumbered. And it’s important for our party to take inventory of that and go out and win the next election instead of continuing the big lie,” he said.
