However, it is a rule in the Olympics that athletes are not allowed to ride their own horses during the modern pentathlon and they were given different horses 20 minutes before the event so everyone has a fair shot at earning their points. Points are given based on how quickly a move is executed and if they can complete the show-jumping course as reported by Yahoo! News.

One horse named Saint Boy, in particular, that was accompanied by Germany’s Annika Schleu refused to cooperate which left the athlete in tears.

Another horse refused to perform in the jumping course as Russia’s Gulnaz Gubaydullina attempted to participate which landed her in placing 32nd during the event. Several other horses were giving multiple athletes a hard time, leading Brazil’s Ieda Guimarares to fall off of her horse after it refused to participate as well.

The horses’ rebuttal and refusals led the athletes to score poorly during the games and cost them their medals.

Former Olympian Hugh Ford said in a statement that it was unfair that the athletes’ hard work was ruined due to the horses’ inability to perform.

“Those horses have been tested around those tracks, but that behavior from that animal, you would expect a higher standard at this level. It’s too cruel.”
