16-year-old Kayla Breonna Green and another female victim, aged 15, were attacked by the suspect during a parade celebrating the Mount Vernon High School basketball team’s state championship around 3:55 p.m. on Gramatan Avenue Friday. Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah said in a statement that the suspect brandished a knife during an altercation involving several girls, leading to the fatal stabbing of Green. The other victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Sources close to Green said the 15-year-old female suspect was reportedly jealous of her prior to the stabbing.

“They took my baby away from me, they murdered my child and then bragging about it but I leave all vengeance to God, everyone that’s reaching out to me tagging me reposting it I really appreciate it I saw it thank you guys so much I am not strong please pray for me,” her mother wrote in an Instagram post.

Weeks before the tragic stabbing, Green celebrated her 16th birthday on March 13.

Mayor Shawyn Patterson called for the community to come together during this “critical time.”  “There is no other way to say it. Mount Vernon, our young people are hurting,” the mayor said. “Their mental, their emotional, their social, and their spiritual health are at an all-time low. I’m asking at this critical moment that we come together as a community,” she said in a Facebook video.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in youth court on Monday for charges of manslaughter, attempted assault, and assault.
