A death certificate for actress Catherine O’Hara, who appeared in films like ‘Home Alone‘ and ‘Beetlejuice,’ and shows like ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ reveals she died from a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) amid a private battle with rectal cancer.
As we previously shared, O’Hara passed away at 71 on Friday, January 30. At the time, TMZ reported that two sources with direct knowledge shared the news about the legendary actress. O’Hara’s agency, CAA, later confirmed the reports, revealing she died at her home in Los Angeles’ Brentwood area “following a brief illness.” Sources did not provide additional details or reveal a possible/confirmed cause of death.
On Monday (February 9), the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released O’Hara’s death certificate, which was obtained by TMZ.
According to the paperwork, the Emmy Award-winning star died after suffering from a pulmonary embolism. O’Hara’s death certificate also lists rectal cancer as the underlying cause of the embolism. Additionally, the document shows that officials created O’Hara’s body and gave her remains to her husband, Robert “Bo” Welch.

Catherine O’Hara became a household name thanks to her unforgettable roles in cult classics like ‘Beetlejuice,’ ‘Home Alone.’ In addition to her roles playing mother to Winona Ryder and Macaulay Culkin, respectively, O’Hara starred in the 2000s mockumentary favorite ‘Best in Show,’ 2003’s ‘A Mighty Wind,’ ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘, and also appeared as “Moira Rose” in 80 episodes of ‘Schitt’s Creek.’
O’Hara most recently earned a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination for her recurring role opposite Seth Rogen in the Apple TV+ hit series, ‘The Studio.’ She also won an Emmy Award for her work in ‘Schitt’s Creek‘ in 2020.
Before her recent win, she won her first Emmy Award in 1982 for her writing contributions to the sketch comedy TV series, ‘SCTV Network 90.’ Additionally, O’Hara nabbed other awards, including 2 SAGs and a Golden Globe, among more.
O’Hara, who was born and raised in Toronto as the sixth of seven children, met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of 1988’s ‘Beetlejuice.’ In 1992, the two got married and welcomed two sons, Matthew and Luke.
