The life of 16-year-old Dagny Benedict was cut short following a vicious attack at Owasso High School in Oklahoma. The heartbreaking incident, which took place on February 7th, left Dagny and another student battered and bruised in a school bathroom.
According to local reports, Dagny, was known as a talented sophomore for her academic achievements but sadly became a victim of relentless bullying at school. Despite her struggles, she remained resilient and determined to live her truth as a non-binary individual, using the name “Nex.” The altercation, reportedly instigated by three older female students, escalated to a point where Dagny and her classmate endured a prolonged assault. Witnesses described a harrowing scene of Dagny being beaten and her head slammed against the floor, leaving her with severe injuries.
Tragically, Dagny, according to reports, was unable to reach the nurse’s office because of the injuries she sustained. It was said that her relatives who were made aware of the incident, rushed her to the hospital but she was released that same day. However, the next day, Feb. 8, the child collapsed at home and was readmitted to the, where she tragically died — the teen’s mother, Sue Benedict told The Independent.

As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding Dagny’s death, questions linger about the accountability of those responsible for the attack. The lack of intervention from school staff during the assault and the subsequent delays in seeking medical help have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the students.
In the midst of this tragedy, Dagny’s mother, Sue Benedict, remembers her child as a resilient and kind-hearted individual who had a passion for gaming, animals, and cooking. The outpouring of support from the community, as seen in the generous donations to a GoFundMe campaign, reflects the impact Dagny had on those around her.
“She was tough, but a great kid,” her mother said at her funeral service last week according to 2 News. “I loved Dagny so much.”
The cause of the confrontation remains under investigation. Per the New York post, police said they are awaiting toxicology reports to determine if there was another possible underlying medical condition which may have caused Benedict’s tragic passing. However, the mother of the other victim told 2 New, “I think complications from brain trauma, head trauma, is what caused it.”
A GoFundMe account has since been set up by a friend of the victim’s mother and had raised nearly $28,000 as of this Tuesday. Police are expected to give updates on the case soon.
