Halsey Explains How Having An Abortion ‘Saved’ Their Life After Enduring 3 Miscarriages: ‘My Body Could Not Terminate The Pregnancy Completely’

Halsey still appears to be in disbelief following the Supreme Court overturning the landmark Roe V. Wade case last week. The ruling revoked a fundamental right to privacy that protected a woman’s choice to have an abortion, with health experts already predicting a rapid rise in maternal mortality rates because of the court’s decision.

In a new interview with Vogue, the 27-year-old bravely admits that having an abortion ultimately saved their life after having suffered three miscarriages before the age of 24. While Halsey, who identifies as non-binary, says they never had a problem conceiving, health problems usually arose during the pregnancy.

“One of my miscarriages required ‘aftercare,’ a gentle way of saying that I would need an abortion, because my body could not terminate the pregnancy completely on its own and I would risk going into sepsis without medical intervention,” she told the magazine. Halsey recalled feeling scared and helpless, yet also desperate to terminate the pregnancy as it began to cause havoc on her health.

“During this procedure, I cried. I was afraid for myself and I was helpless. I was desperate to end the pregnancy that was threatening my life. Many people have asked me if, since carrying a child to term after years of struggling to do so, I have reconsidered my stance on abortion. The answer is firmly no.”

The “Without Me” pop star reiterated words they shared shortly after the ruling was made last Friday, stressing that despite the court’s decision, Halsey will continue to fight for women’s rights, stressing she has never felt more strongly about her stance on abortion. “My abortion saved my life and gave way for my son to have his. Every person deserves the right to choose when, if, and how they have this dangerous and life-altering experience. I will hold my son in one arm, and fight with all my might with the other.”

Halsey announced she was pregnant in January 2021 before welcoming her son Ender in July that very same year. She shares her little toddler with Alev Alydin.

Earlier this week, the New Jersey native made headlines after telling fans at her concert in Phoenix, Arizona to leave if they supported Roe v. Wade being overturned. And from reports claimed, a considerable number of people ended up walking out.

In a statement made after the show, Halsey shared an update to what occurred during the show, writing, “The ‘people pay to see you sing not hear your views’ argument is so dumb. No, you paid to see me use a stage as a form of expression in the manner that I choose. Sorry you lack the critical thinking to realize that the rhetorical power of music doesn’t always serve your escapism.”
