In 1992, the ‘Monster’s Ball‘ actress met her first husband, MLB player David Justice, after seeing him play in a charity baseball game on MTV. After dating for about five months, Berry proposed to the former Atlanta Braves player, and he accepted. On New Year’s Day of 1993, the two tied the knot. They went on to spend three years together before eventually splitting in 1996.

During his ‘All The Smoke‘ podcast interview, Justice explained to former NBA player Matt Barnes, 45, that the two had ideological differences. While he wanted a traditional wife who would cook, clean, and care for their future children, Berry was seriously pursuing and focused on her movie career and always traveling. Ultimately, Justice claimed he was the one paying their bills because she was just starting out.

He also claimed that when Berry proposed, he didn’t know if his “heart was really into it” because they’d only been dating for five months. He told Barnes, “I said, ‘OK,’ because I couldn’t say no. Who’s going to say no at that time? I didn’t want to make her feel bad.” He revealed that they didn’t receive a lot of “negative attention until I decided to leave her in 1996.” He continued to explain:

“My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast. So, I’m looking at my mom — and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know? Then I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’ At that time, as a young guy — she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like, motherly, and then we start having issues.

We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country. And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it. We never had any major issues like that. It’s just … because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her.”

Justice, 59, didn’t see Berry, 58, fit to be the mother of his kids. The 2-time World Series Champion even claimed that she once kissed a fellow actor on his lips in his presence, and allegedly told him, “That is how we behave in Hollywood.” Subsequently, Justice fell out of love and told Berry that he wanted a divorce.

To Justice’s surprise, infidelity rumors began surfacing, accusing him of being responsible for their divorce. He suggested Berry did nothing to silence the rumors as she was enjoying the public sympathy. Despite wanting to go out and clear his name, his mother intervened and stopped him. Justice was also back in the spotlight when Berry revealed that she was deaf in one ear due to domestic assault by an ex. While everyone assumed it to be Justice, Berry remained silent.
