A video circulating online shows the moment a groom accidentally shot and killed his friend during a wedding ceremony in India.

In the video clip, Manish Madheshia was given a pistol in front of a large crowd during the ceremony and lifted the gun in the air but accidentally discharges the weapon after. Moments later, a man wearing a white T-shirt was shot and stunned onlookers cried out for help. Police later identified the victim as 35-year-old Babu Lal Yadav and said he was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from his injuries.

Investigators also said Yadav was a member of the Indian army and had permission to travel to attend his friend’s special day. Madheisha was arrested and charged with Yadav’s death and police seized the pistol as reported by the New York Post.

 ‘The incident took place during the marriage function organized in Ashirwad Vatika which falls under the police station Robertsganj. A person who’s serving in the army was identified as Babulal Yadav died after being shot during the celebratory firing by the groom – Manish Madheshia. The pistol has also been seized and the probe is underway,‘ said Superintendent of Police of Sonbhandra Amrendra, Uttar Pradesh, Pratap Singh.

According to the Daily Mail, a similar incident took place back in 2019. Satyendra Kumar was killed after a guest fired three celebratory gunshots during his wedding. Minutes after the shooting, he exchanged garlands with his bride, Bhuletan Rai, at a ceremony in Patna. The celebratory gunfire is a wedding tradition in some parts of India and is seen as a symbol of muscle power, prestige, and money.

Social media reacts to the shooting and some believe the tradition is dangerous plus outdated

Twitter users from the region reacted to the shooting and had various opinions about the shooting.

One Twitter user wrote, “People who give moral lessons when some American shooting happens – see, this is what happens when you give guns to idiots in India.” Another tweeted in response, “Imagine how much I would have repented if a girl married such a fool!”

A statement from the groom has yet to be released.
