According to the New York Post, a Great White named Mary Lee and several others have been lurking around New York and New Jersey waters as detected by the Ocearch online shark tracker. Their names are Caroline, Caper, Cabor, and Vimy. Most of the sharks at measured to be between 13 to 16 feet in length and weigh between 533 to 1,348 pounds.

Recently, a 7-foot thresher shark washed up on shore at Rockaway Beach, Queens on July 1. Officials say its species of shark is harmless to humans.

Experts reported that driving to the beach is much riskier than encountering a Great White and its a good sign that the sharks are in local waters. The reason is that the waters are much cleaner and leads to an abundance of baitfish and seals that are prey to sharks.

“Be smart. Don’t swim out into the ocean if you see a bunch of seals, baitfish crashing, and birds diving”, said Chris Fischer, founder of the Ochearch shark tracker.
