Caroline Duddridge, a 63-year-old grandmother from Fairwater in Cardiff, has sparked controversy by charging her family members for their Christmas dinner. This tradition, which began after the passing of her husband in 2015, has recently seen an increase in prices due to the rising cost of living and food prices.
Caroline’s decision to charge her loved ones for the festive meal stems from the financial strain she faces during the holiday season. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, she expressed her concerns about the extreme prices at supermarkets, describing regular food shopping as “just horrifying.” To alleviate the issue, Caroline decided to implement a system where her family members contribute financially to the Christmas dinner.

To receive the money, Duddridge recommends that her relatives put the money immediately into her bank account to guarantee a seamless transaction and to maintain track of payments. This strategy enables her to readily detect stragglers and keep track of contributions. While some may find this method unusual, She believes it is a reasonable way to manage the costs associated with organizing a large holiday party.
Caroline’s pricing structure takes into account the financial circumstances of her family members. In 2022, she charged her two sons £15($19.03) each, her three daughters £10($12.68) each, her four grandchildren over the age of five £5($6.34) each, and her two three-year-old grandchildren £2.50($3.17) each. The slight variation in prices reflects the different employment statuses and family sizes of her children. However, Caroline has decided to increase the prices for her daughters this year by £2, as she faced criticism for being perceived as sexist.
Despite the controversy surrounding her approach, Caroline argues that her fees are still good value for money. She emphasizes that her festive spread lasts from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day, including a mini buffet of sandwiches, a lavish turkey dinner with all the trimmings, a nut roast, and a choice of four desserts on Christmas Day. Additionally, there is a full buffet on the following day.
