It is reported that on June 2, 63-year-old Neville Linton purchased a bag of broccoli from his local Aldi store in Stourbridge, West Midlands, which is in the United Kingdom. When he got to his Birmingham home, he placed the bag in the refrigerator, and three days later he pulled the bag out to make a meal.

However, when the grandfather of one opened the bag of green little trees, he encountered a “frightening” experience when he discovered a young ladder snake tucked between some broccoli heads. Now, it is said that ladder snakes are capable of biting people and it is not fun or pretty when it happens.

Linton, who is an employee at an industrial cleaning company, revealed that he is super afraid of snakes, so naturally fear took over his body when he saw the slithering snake; so his relatives came to his rescue and scooped up the bag with the snake tucked away.

Linton said, “It was pretty frightening. I’m not good with snakes. It’s lucky I didn’t just leave the broccoli out in the kitchen, or it would have been loose in the house. That would have been a huge risk for us because we have two vulnerable people living here.”

Recalling how the whole thing happened, the father of three said he grabbed the bag of broccoli on his regular weekly grocery shopping haul at Aldi, but was taken back when he saw the slithering snake at home. At first, he thought it was a caterpillar, but then quickly realized it was too big to be one. So he called for his 57-year-old sister, Ann-Marie Tenkanemin, who confirmed it was a snake.

With the help of his sister, the two popped the bag, with the slithering snake inside, into a plastic container. They then drove the bag back to the Aldi store where Linton bought it. He said, “I thought she was joking at first, but I backed off when I saw it start moving. The guy in the shop was pretty frightened, too.”

Later, Linton’s 41-year-old son, Donovan Linton, said that a specialist at the Dudley Zoo confirmed the snake species as being a young ladder snake. Linton also revealed that he has been offered some compensation for the scary incident, but he is asking for more. He said, “It’s just not good enough — the implications for us if it had [gotten] out in the house are huge. Plus, I’m phobic of snakes, so there’s the emotional impact of that, too.”

Since, a spokesperson for Aldi has released a statement and said, “Our supplier has never had a complaint of this nature and has robust processes in place to prevent such issues occurring. We are investigating this isolated incident and have apologized to Mr. Linton that our usual high standards were not met.”
