Gov. Andrew Cuomo Approves VMAs At Barclays Center With ‘Limited Or No Audience’

While this weekend’s Daytime Emmy Awards and BET Awards took place virtually, with all audience members at home, it appears the VMAs will be a little more ‘laxed on COVID-19 regulations as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo approves the Barclays Center to host this year’s ceremony with “limited or no audience.”

Gov. Cuomo made the announcement on Monday, stating that the 36th annual Video Music Awards show will move forward with plans to take place at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center later this summer on August 30, so long as there is “limited or no audience present.”

In May, MTV said they were still looking to air the awards show this summer, stating, “We’re exploring with government officials, the medical community and key stakeholders on how to safely hold the 2020 VMAs at Barclays Center on August 30th. The health of everyone involved is our number one priority. Additionally, we are working on several contingency plans to bring music’s biggest night to audiences everywhere..”

Furthermore, this will be the first time since 2013 that the ceremony’s been held at the Barclays.
