Gospel singer Kim Burrell is apologizing in a very public way to the LGBTQ+ Community after hopping online over the years to spread harsh and homophobic-themed remarks.
While using her platform for love and unity, Kim Burrell took to the stage at the 2024 Stellar Awards over the weekend to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community while accepting the Aretha Franklin Icon Award. During her acceptance speech, Kim Burrell said she hopes to best use this moment to “build a bridge” while seeking peace with the LGBTQ+ Community, etc.
Kim Burrell began, “I want to apologize to the LGBTQ community. Let’s give them a great big round of applause. We want them to have strength and to sincerely know that we must all do the work to embrace all of God’s people and show forth His love to everyone. Amen! Tonight, I hope that this award and this moment can be the beginning of a bridge-building and listening to each other as we follow peace with all man and develop the character of God, which requires seeing God.”
Prior to her latest apology, Kim Burrell notably came for the LGBTQ+ Community back in December 2016 when the Gospel singer shared a Christmas-time sermon, in which she referred to Gay and Lesbian people as perverted. A video that continues to go viral shows Burrell at Houston’s Love and Liberty Fellowship Church offering her critical and harsh sermon.
The following day, Burrell went online and addressed her “anti-gay” sermon, claiming she was “giving clarity” and only doing the work of God as she serves Him. She claimed “spirits don’t understand” and that she’s not retaliating against anyone, just “doing the work of the Lord.”
However, she never directly apologized for her harsh and homophobic-themed criticism — which arrived just days before she was set to appear on Ellen DeGeneres’ show ‘Ellen.’ Despite her lengthy address, Burrell’s remarks were solidified and in January 2017, days after the Gospel singer’s anti-Gay sermon, CBS News reported that ‘Ellen’ dropped Kim Burrell’s spot.
