The GOP lawmaker was one of the few dozen people who participated in seizing the Capitol and live-streamed the event from his Facebook page. During the live, Evans could be heard saying “We’re here. We’re here. Derrick Evans is in the Capitol.” and previously said he wouldn’t resign despite his actions inside the federal building.

However, he later apologized for his role in the riots and called the past week “a difficult time for me, my family, colleagues, and myself” in his resignation letter. “I take full responsibility for my actions, and deeply regret any hurt, pain or embarrassment I may have caused my family, friends, constituents and fellow West Virginians, I hope this action I take today can remove any cloud of distraction from the state Legislature, so my colleagues can get to work in earnest building a brighter future for our state,” the letter reads.
