German Zoo Considers Feeding Animals To Each Other Amidst Coronavirus

A zoo in Germany that is struggling to stay afloat has admitted that they might have to feed animals to each other in order to survive amidst Coronavirus lockdowns.

”We’ve listed the animals we’ll have to slaughter first,” Verena Kaspari, director of Neumünster Zoo said, per BBC,“If it comes to it, I’ll have to euthanize animals, rather than let them starve. At the worst, we would have to feed some of the animals to others.

Neumünster Zoo Is part of an association, thus, it will not receive funding from the government. It houses over 700 animals of 100 different species, but the nationwide lockdown has prevented visitors and caused an estimated loss of $200,000.

“We’re an association and don’t get any city money, and all the state money we’ve applied for so far hasn’t arrived yet,” Kaspari added.

“A possible loss of this valuable animal population would be a bitter setback for our struggle to conserve biodiversity and would therefore amount to a catastrophe,” Vice President of the association, VdZ President Jörg Junhold said in a statement.
