On Tuesday (June 25), Newsweek reported that, “effective immediately,” 38-year-old Christina Peterson was removed from her position as a probate judge in Douglas County after facing growing concerns over her practices. The reported scrutiny arrived before her allegedly assaulting an Atlanta Police Department Officer outside of a nightclub last week.

In the early hours of June 20, there was a fight outside of the Red Martini Restaurant and Lounge on Peachtree Road. According to 11alive, cell phone footage showed the moments leading up to Peterson’s arrest, including her attempts to break up the fight at the club involving a man and a woman.

Peterson’s attorney and Fulton County commissioner Marvin Arrington told the outlet that he believes his client was so distracted that she didn’t realize the police officer was in her space when she allegedly assaulted them. He said, “She didn’t even know the officer was there.” Upon arrival, the police officer tried to de-escalate the fight and ended up handcuffing Christina Peterson, accusing her of hitting an officer.

After the two alleged altercations involving Douglas County probate judge Christina Peterson, which led to her arrest and charges of felony obstruction and simple battery, she has also now been removed from the bench by a Georgia Supreme Court judge. It’s reported that Christina Peterson had already been facing growing scrutiny over her practices on the bench.

Due to the reported scrutiny, the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC) ruled that Christina Peterson should be removed from her position, and on Tuesday, the Georgia Supreme Court agreed, highlighting that their ruling was not related to her recent arrest for allegedly assaulting a cop. According to Fox News, the Georgia Supreme Court said there was an ongoing investigation into separate ethics charges and scrutiny against Christina Peterson and that the JQC found her guilty of “systemic incompetence” and recommended her removal in April.

A statement read, “In conclusion, in light of her multiple violations of the CJC rules in relation to several matters—some of them reflecting a flagrant disregard for the law, court rules, and judicial conduct rules; the pattern of violations that the Director proved by clear and convincing evidence; the extremely concerning nature of some of those violations, in particular with respect to the criminal contempt matter; and her behavior during the JQC inquiry, we conclude that removal is the appropriate sanction.”
