George Floyd’s Brother To Lawmakers: ‘He Didn’t Deserve To Die Over $20’
This Wednesday, Philonise Floyd appeared before the House Judiciary Committee for an oversight hearing on policing and law enforcement accountability. He urged Congress to take action to reform law enforcement in honor of his late brother George Floyd during his opening statement.
As we previously reported, George Floyd was killed while in Minneapolis police custody, which sparked a national outcry along with sustained protests and civil unrest over the issue of police misconduct and racial injustice.
While speaking, Philonise recalled Floyd’s last moments and told House lawmakers that his brother “didn’t deserve to die over $20,” asking them “is that what a black man’s worth? Twenty dollars? This is 2020. Enough is enough.” Philonise also explained, “I couldn’t take care of George the day he was killed, but maybe by speaking with you today, I can make sure that his death would not be in vain,” an emotional Philonise Floyd told lawmakers. “To make sure that he is more than another face on a t-shirt. More than another name on a list that won’t stop growing,” adding, “I’m here today to ask you to make it stop. Stop the pain,” he said. “Stop us from being tired.”
As Fox News notes, the hearing seeks “to examine the crisis of racial profiling, police brutality and lost trust between police departments,” according to the committee. The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a similar hearing on “Police Use of Force and Community Relations” on June 16.
