Former Republican Candidate For Governor Charged With Murder & Rape Of 12-Year-Old-Girl

An Idaho man who recently ran for governor has been arrested for the 1984 murder and rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Republican Candidate Steven Pankey reportedly kidnapped Jonelle Matthews from her Greeley, Colorado, home on Dec. 20, 1984. He is reported to have shot her in the head.

KMGH reports that Matthews was missing for decades until her remains were finally found in Greeley in July 2019.

According to an indictment, Pankey “intentionally inserted himself in the investigation many times over the years claiming to have knowledge of the crime which grew inconsistent and incriminating over time.”

His ex wife even said that they took an “unexpected” trip to California the morning after Matthews went missing to establish an alibi “contained false and superfluous details.” His ex recalled that Pankey acted “uncharacteristically” during the trip.

“For over three decades the disappearance of Jonelle Matthews has left our community with many unanswered questions and a void that has not been filled,” Colorado Chief Jones said. “With the arrest of Steve Pankey for the murder of Jonelle Matthews, some of these questions are starting to be answered.”

“I trust this new development helps the Matthews family, their friends, and our community to receive some closure and healing from this horrific crime.”

Pankey was was indicted by a grand jury on October 9 on charges including two counts of first degree murder, second degree kidnapping and crime of violence charges. He is being held without bond in Ada County Jail pending extradition to Colorado.
