Ex-Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jackie Johnson is accused of violating her oath of office and obstructing police after Arbery’s death in February of 2020.

A video went viral after white men chased and shot 25-year-old Arbery which caused public demands for accountability and accusations of a coverup by some local authorities.

Thursday’s indictment says Johnson showed “favor and affection” to the suspect Greg McMichael who use to be an investigator in her office. Also stating she failed to “treat Ahmaud Arbery and his family fairly and with dignity”.

Arbery’s attorney Lee Merritt said “from my perspective, this is historic.” He also shared how these charges stand out way more any other case he has handled.

“We rarely see — and I’ve never seen — accountability for a prosecutor who interfered in an investigation,” Merritt shared.

This violation of oath for a public officer is classified as a felony which can be a sentence of one to five years. Also hindering a law enforcement officer is a misdemeanor which can carry up to 12 months.
