A video released by a Florida sheriff’s office captures the moment a sniper shot and killed a suspected armed bank robber who was holding hostages through a computer monitor.

On February 6, the incident occurred at a Bank of America in Fort Myers, as described by Sheriff Carmine Marceno of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO). Deputies who arrived at the scene found that the suspect had a knife and alleged possession of a bomb while holding a man and a woman captive.

Sheriff Carmine Marceno stated in a previous press conference that they made continuous attempts to negotiate with the suspect. He also mentioned that at one point, the suspect held a knife to the female hostage’s throat. Following the suspect’s display of deadly force, an LCSO Special Operations Unit sniper took a carefully planned shot through a computer monitor, hitting the suspect in the center of the forehead and causing his immediate death.

After being identified by LCSO as 36-year-old Sterling Alavache, the suspect fell to the ground as the hostages fled the scene. Following the shooting of the suspect, flash bangs were utilized as distraction devices while the Special Operations Unit intervened to evacuate the hostages and verify that the suspect was no longer posing a threat, as stated by the sheriff.

Towards the end of the video, the monitor was shown with a noticeable hole through it, yet it was still operational.

“Firing through barriers is a trained and routinely practiced skill by Lee County Sheriff’s Special Operations unit snipers,” LCSO public information officer Lieutenant Todd Olmer said in the video shared on Facebook. “The .308 caliber bullet used is specifically selected due to its known ballistic reliability traveling through intermediate barriers.”
