Florida Residents Call ‘Terrorism’ As State Begins Release Of Genetically Modified Mosquitoes

After we previously reported back in August 2020, Florida is now set to being the release of 12,000+ genetically modified mosquitoes over the next 12 weeks — something officials claim they’re doing to reduce the diseases the bugs transmit, but local residents are calling them out for “terrorism.”

In the past few days, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District and Oxitec Ltd have announced details on the rollout of the engineered bugs, noting that the entire project is a “safe, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly solution” to controlling the Aedes aegypti mosquito species. They explain that non-biting male mosquitoes will emerge and mate with local biting female mosquitoes, resulting in the female offspring dying off, being unable to efficiently survive — therefore controlling the population of Aedes aegypti, the species that is responsible for “virtually all mosquito-borne diseases,” like dengue, Zika and yellow fever.

Meanwhile, local residents to the Florida Keys and beyond are quite unhappy with the procedure and experimentation set to take place. Some residents say they unknowingly signed off on participating in the project, as they were led to believe it was a new pest control project. Elsewhere, local residents are calling the project “criminal” and “terroristic.” #Socialites, thoughts?
