Around 9 p.m. on Wednesday (January 3), Spencer’s 6-year-old boy called 9-1-1 and told the phone operator that his mother had left him and his toddler brother alone in their home near Miami Shores. When police officers arrived at the scene in the 200 block of Northwest 84th Street, they found the boys inside a “very dirty” home.

In their police report, officers said the home, which was located in an apartment complex located south of Larchmont Gardens Park in the county’s West Little River Area, did not have power nor any food inside. The officers also called the children “dirty,” claiming the abandoned boys appeared to be unbathed.

Police said they tried to get in contact with Spencer using a phone number that the 6-year-old boy provided, but she did not answer. Officers said she was nowhere to be found in the area and that it took about four hours for a Florida Department of Children and Families investigator to retrieve the children from the home. Florida DCF officials did not arrive at the home until 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.

During that time, officials said Spencer still had not shown up. The report said, “[Spencer] failed to provide and protect [her sons] with care, supervision, and the services necessary to maintain [their] physical and mental health.”
