The case was documented in the American Journal of Medical Case Reports which described the man sneezed vigorously during breakfast, causing him to feel discomfort and a wet sensation in his lower abdomen. After inspecting the area, he was horrified to find loops of his intestines protruding from his surgical wound, NDTV reported. The man quickly covered his exposed bowels with his shirt as his wife contacted 911.

Paramedics discovered that the man had a three-inch vertical tear in his abdomen where a portion of his bowel was exposed. Miraculously, the man did not suffer massive blood loss and was transported to a nearby hospital. When he arrived, doctors said his vital signs were stable, and pre-surgery tests showed no changes.

Before entering surgery, the man consented to the procedure after doctors inserted a nasogastric tube. They performed an exploratory laparotomy, and three surgeons repositioned the bowel back into the abdominal cavity. Afterward, they inspected the intestine and stated there was no further damage.

To prevent future incidents, the surgical site was secured with stitches, specifically figure-of-eight stitches, which are used to secure surgical wounds efficiently. For six days the man spent six days in the hospital under observation, and he was placed on a regular diet to ensure a steady recovery.
