Florida Governor Drafting Bill To Allow People To Shoot ‘Looters & Rioters’
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is in the works of creating an “anti-mob” bill to allow people to shoot “looters and rioters” who may be within 500 feet of a “violent or disorderly assembly.” The drafted legislation would expand Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law.
Meanwhile, lawyers oppose the “troubling” bill. Former Miami-Dade County prosecutor Denise Georges, who’s handled Stand Your Ground cases, says, “It allows for vigilantes to justify their actions. It also allows for death to be the punishment for a property crime — and that is cruel and unusual punishment. We cannot live in a lawless society where taking a life is done so casually and recklessly.”

In DeSantis’ draft, it reinforces his September pledge to crack down on “violent and disorderly assemblies” and would expand the list of “forcible felonies” under the state’s self-defense law, including criminal mischief that cause any “interruption or impairment” of a business. The draft also proposes that blocking traffic during a protest could be considered a third-degree felony; and that drivers who “accidentally” kill or injure protesters could be offered immunity.
As this moment, the draft version of the bill hasn’t been filed to the House or the Senate, but has already gained opposition by many concerned individuals.
