Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Wants Restaurants To Stay fully open Despite Spike In COVID Cases

While many states are tightening up on their COVID measures to help slow or stop the spread of the virus, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis doesn’t want to make any major changes.

On Tuesday, DeSantis said that all restaurants and bars in the state would be allowed to operate at full capacity for the rest of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of shutting down stores, the governor claimed most people were getting infected in their homes, not at restaurants, according to the Sun-Sentinel: “It doesn’t mean it can’t happen here but I think we have to understand the vast, vast majority of infections are occurring in people’s homes,” DeSantis said.

He added, “Some may want to shut you down, we want to pull you up,” DeSantis said. “We’ve got your back, if you’re somebody who’s a waitress or a cook or you’re a family-owned business, you’re an important part of our state.” DeSantis’ comments came as Florida has seen increases in COVID-19 infections following the Thanksgiving holiday. More than 20,000 Floridians have died from COVID-19. Another 9,439 tested positive for the virus Monday.

So far, New York has shut down indoor dining. As of Tuesday, more than 300,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the United States.
