Florida Family Seeks Arrest After Black Mother Of 4 Shot And Killed By Neighbor While Trying To Retrieve Son’s Tablet
The mother has since been identified as 35-year-old Ajike “AJ” Owens, and according to the family’s attorney, she was killed following a longtime, years-long feud with a neighbor, who had previously complained about her children playing outside all the time.
Deputies in Marion County, Florida said that they received a call on Friday (June 2) about a woman trespassing. When they arrived to the scene, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. According to one witness, the shooter, who is also a woman, had “engaged” with the victim’s children prior to the shooting. They claimed that there was a dispute over one the victim’s children and their tablet device, which resulted in the neighbor throwing a pair of skates at the child, and hitting them.
Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said following that interaction, that child went back into their home and reported the incident to their mother, who then went to the neighbor’s home to go “confront the lady.” When the victim knocked on the door, the shooter claims there was “a lot of aggressiveness” on both sides, and that there were several threats made from both parties.
Sadly, one person’s threats were followed up on and the confrontation ended with Owens being shot through the door. After police arrived and found the victim shot, they rushed her to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Since the incident, the Sheriff’s Office said that the woman who shot and killed Owens has been fully cooperative with law enforcement officials. However, there still has not been an arrest made, and Owens’ family is demanding justice. Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump is now representing the family and identified the shooter as a 58-year-old white woman.
Speaking on her daughter’s death, Pamela Diaz said that the neighbor’s door “was never opened” when her daughter got shot. She added, “My daughter, my grandchildren’s mother, was shot and killed with her 9-year-old son standing next to her. She had no weapon, she posed no imminent threat to anyone. What I’m asking is for justice. Justice for my daughter.”
