Flav showed his support by standing up to energize the crowd after the U.S. team scored a late goal in the match.

In a previous interview with PEOPLE, the Grammy-winning rap icon discussed his choice to sponsor the U.S. women’s water polo team. He was motivated by a conversation with team captain Maggie Steffens, who revealed that many of her teammates hold multiple jobs to support their Olympic aspirations.
