Five-Star College Basketball Recruit Makur Maker Commits To Howard Over UCLA: “I Need To Make The HBCU Movement Real”

Social media is celebrating Makur Maker, a five-star senior who just announced his commitment to Howard University this Friday morning. According to ESPN, Maker is now the highest-ranked college basketball prospect to commit to a historically Black college or university since the ESPN recruiting database started in 2007.

Maker took to Twitter to share the good news and explain why he decided to choose Howard over Kentucky, Oregon, UCLA, and USC:

“I was the 1st to announce my visit to Howard & other started to dream ‘what if,'” Maker wrote on Twitter. “I need to make the HBCU movement real so that others will follow. I hope I inspire guys like Mikey Williams to join me on this journey. I am committing to Howard U & coach Kenny Blakeney.”

He added, “I want to thank Coach Cal and Coach KP of University of Kentucky Coach Cronin of UCLA and coach Hardaway of Memphis for considering me. It was a tough choice.”

Social media users were quick to commend him on his big move. One fan wrote on Twitter,

“Congratulations Makur! You have not only made one of the best decisions of your life… you have changed HBCU athletics forever! Howard U is the greatest school on earth. You will be immensely empowered on day one. There is no other place quite like it on earth. #BisonExcellence.” Another said, “Man this is [Inspiring.] After reading the comments seeing what you are gonna sacrifice because of the belief in yourself that you can make change happen is truly rare and incredibly brave. Will definitely be a fan we need more people like you.”
