The statue, named the “Fragment of Myron’s Samian Athena”, was purchased by Kim Kardashian in 2016 from the Axel Vervoodt Gallery in Belgium. According to Page Six, the artwork was stopped by authorities after it arrived in Los Angeles when they were alerted that the statue could’ve been looted. Documentation also revealed that the shipment was valued at $745,882 and contained other materials such as furniture and decorations.
An archaeologist who was sent by Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage did a further investigation said the statue was “looted, smuggled, and illegally exported from Italy.” On Friday, Kim was asked to return the artwork after a civil forfeiture complaint was filed in California.
