U.S. District Judge Ellen Hollander out of Maryland ain’t playing around. She hit pause on DOGE’s access and demanded that they delete any personal data they might’ve already scooped up. That includes personally identifiable information (PII), which could mean everything from Social Security numbers to sensitive health data.

This emergency order followed a strong push from labor unions and retired federal workers, who’ve been sounding the alarm on how wild DOGE’s data access really is. They say the DOGE squad is breaking privacy laws and putting millions of Americans’ personal info at risk.

Judge Hollander isn’t holding back. She called DOGE’s mission a “fishing expedition at SSA, in search of a fraud epidemic, based on little more than suspicion.”

DOGE, led by Musk’s hand-picked crew, has been running deep inside federal systems. According to court docs, seven out of ten DOGE team members had full read-only access to SSA data—an unprecedented level of exposure that had even former SSA officials shook.

One ex-official said she saw DOGE agents storm the scene just days after Trump’s inauguration, demanding immediate access to secure data systems. That same official noted the team was looking for fraud based on errors and miscommunication, not necessarily any real wrongdoing.
