According to Yahoo! News, the Davenport Police Department reported Jeramie Shorter,26, was preparing for his son Jermier’s funeral, who passed away after battling cancer two weeks earlier. Witnesses said the gunman was spotted at Weert’s Funeral Home shortly before 11:30 a.m. and started shooting when two attendees were arguing at the funeral parking lot. After he shot Shorter, the suspect fled in a 2004 Infiniti G35 without license plates, leading police on a high-speed chase.
Investigators later identified the suspect as Nuemonei Laster, 24, and charged him with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, eluding arrest, and interference with official acts with a weapon. Although a motive is currently unclear, officers said Laster “willfully” shot the victim and premeditated the shooting.

Shorter was transported to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries. His father condemned the shooting and asked why would anyone bring a gun to a child’s funeral.
‘Him losing his son. I’m losing my grandson to cancer that he fought for many years. We went through that two weeks ago, then to go through this? Now I don’t have him. It’s hard, Why would you want to bring a gun to a kid’s wake? To a baby’s wake? No matter what’s going on. Where was your mind thinking?’
Other records revealed Laster is banned from owning a gun due to a prior felony conviction from 2018.
