David King,56, and his son Edward,20, were convicted for killing Neil Charles,47, after they attacked him with a ninja sword and knife, LADBible reported. The father-son took justice into their own hands after they were alerted about a thief attempting to open doors on cars and houses in the community in June 2021. Before his death, Neil Charles was convicted of burglary and theft.
Investigators said they didn’t bother to contact the police and reportedly had a ‘fascination’ with weapons. David used a double-edged knife, while Edward used the 27-inch ninja sword. Charles died after a stab wound in the chest, and the ninja sword sliced his knee.

Police also received a call from David around 3 am about a man attempting to steal his car but claimed he tried to chase him down. He added that the man had fled the scene, referring to Charles. He also told the call center that he had a knife in his hand but was unsure if the thief was playing around or seriously injured after the attack.
Suffolk Police arrived at the scene and found David away from his home address and Charles on Winsford Road. He died two days later from his injuries at a local hospital.
David was immediately arrested, while Edward was detained on June 20. They initially denied the intentional killing charges of Charles but were convicted in May 2022.
Earlier this week, the father and son were issued life sentences. Charles’ sister said in her victim impact statement that her brother was a ‘kind’ man who would retreat from a situation because he didn’t like confrontation.
“We know he took the wrong path in life but he wasn’t violent or aggressive and that night he was simply trying to get away.”
Heather King, David’s wife, and Edward’s mother, said they plan to appeal the convictions.
In the United Kingdom, vigilante justice has become an increasingly prominent issue in recent years, especially on public transportation. With reports of violent altercations between passengers soaring in recent years, many are calling for a stronger focus on vigilante justice to ensure the safety of those riding public transportation.
Vigilantism is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach. We need to look at how the police and other authorities can better protect passengers while also providing support systems to those who feel they have no choice but to take matters into their own hands.
