Facebook Sued By Justice Department For Allegedly ‘Discriminating Against Americans’ & Giving Jobs To Immigrants
The U.S. Department of Justice under the Donald Trump administration has filed a lawsuit accusing Facebook discriminating discriminating against American workers by primarily hiring foreign immigrants.
The suit claims that Facebook preferred to hire foreign workers with temporary H-1B visas because it is cheaper. The H1-B visa category permits U.S. companies to hire immigrabts in “specialty occupations,” with experienced skills and qualifications that may not be as widely available in the U.S. Facebook CEO has been an advocate for providing jobs for immigrants in the tech sector if they met the qualifications. However, the DOJ claims that the social media giant “refused” to give jobs tp qualified U.S. workers for over 2,600 open jobs that paid $156,000 a year.

“The department concluded that, during the relevant period, Facebook received zero or one U.S. worker applicants for 99.7% of its PERM positions, while comparable positions at Facebook that were advertised on its careers website during a similar time period typically attracted 100 or more applicants each,” a statement from DOJ said.
A Facebook spokesperson sent a statement to NPR in regards to the lawsuit and investigation,
“Facebook has been cooperating with the [Department of Justice] in its review of this issue and while we dispute the allegations in the complaint, we cannot comment further on pending litigation.”
