Facebook Apologizes For “Primates” Comment On Video Of Black Men Encountering Police

Facebook has issued an apology after placing a “primates”on a video of Black men who encounter white citizens and police officers.

The video was uploaded by the Daily Mail on June 2020 where it showed Black men having an altercation with police officers.  As reported by the New York Times, an automatic message popped up at the end and said “Keep seeing more videos about primates.” Facebook apologized for the error, calling it “unacceptable” and turned off the artificial intelligence feature on the video along with promising further to investigate the situation.

‘This was clearly an unacceptable error on Facebook and we disabled the entire topic recommendation feature as soon as we realized this was happening so we could investigate the cause and prevent this from happening again,’

Facebook has faced criticism in the past in regards to their AI technology and alleged biased descriptions about people of color as reported by the Daily Mail.
