The former couple had a history of domestic violence and his estranged wife filed a restraining order against Garcia

Garcia was hired as CEO of Amazon Mexico when the company opened its first office in 2015. The couple were separated after Garcia’s wife, Abril Pérez Sagaón, filed a lawsuit against him. During a court hearing in Mexico City earlier this week, one of the hitmen that were hired Garcia testified that he offered an additional $2,500 if his estranged wife, Abril Pérez Sagaón, was killed before their next court hearing.

According to the New York Post, Pérez filed for divorce in January 2019 after she accused him of trying to kill her while beating her with a baseball bat. Before her death, she was in Mexico City for a scheduled court hearing when a motorcyclist opened fire and fatally shot her while she was in a car with her two children and attorney.

The former Amazon Mexico CEO sent a four-page letter to the Mexico City mayor to prove his innocence

The murder trial begins on Monday and Interpol has issued a warrant for Garcia’s arrest in 190 countries after he went on the lam for after his estranged wife’s death. He allegedly escaped Mexico a few days after the murder and entered a checkpoint near Tijuana. After entering the United States, he reportedly sent a letter to the mayor of Mexico City claiming he was innocent.

“As a father, I would never have wanted them to go through this situation that has affected them (their children) and has changed our lives because of the pain that this has generated. The reality is that Abril and I had a discussion about marital problems, which, out of respect for my ex-wife and children, I am not going to mention because they are narrated in a complaint that I filed with the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, the January 7, before my ex-wife reported me,” the letter reads.

“She went to the kitchen, took a knife and when she came back I had my back to her, she stuck the knife in my left arm at the moment when I was screaming that she wanted to kill me because I was not going to let our children they would find out about the marital problems that we sustained.”

Garcia was originally taken into custody for the baseball bat incident but was later released when a judge lowered the charge to a domestic violence charge.
