Episode Of ‘The Golden Girls’ Pulled From Hulu For Featuring Blackface
Disney-ABC Domestic Television has pulled an episode of “The Golden Girls‘ from Hulu for featuring two of its main characters in blackface. The episode, “Mixed Blessings,” aired in 1988 as the 23rd episode of the sitcom’s third season.
The episode summary details Michael, played by Scott Jacoby, looking to marry an older black woman named Lorraine, played by Rosalind Cash. While Michael’s mother Dorothy, played by Bea Arthur, disapproves of their union due to their age difference, Lorraine’s family disapproves of their interracial relationship. So, the two families attempt to stop the wedding.

During the episode, Rose, played by Betty White, and Blanche, played by Rue McClanahan, are seen using a mud face treatment, and as they go to greet Lorraine’s family, they tell them, “This is mud on our faces, we’re not really black.” After critics called the scene problematic for years, the episode has now been removed from Hulu’s streaming service.
