After reportedly killing about 1,500 animals in botched experiments, Neuralink, the brain chip company founded by Elon Musk in 2016, has revealed that the FDA approved testing of brain implants in humans.

Since experiments conducted in 2018, Elon Musk’s brain chip company Neuralink has reportedly killed about 1,500 animals, including more than 280 sheep, pigs, and monkeys.

In December 2022, it was reported that Musk’s company faced a federal probe and employee backlash after the medical device company conducted several fatal experiments on hundreds of animals.

The federal investigation — which looked into potential animal-welfare violations — was sparked after internal staff complained about animal testing being rushed and resulting in needless suffering and deaths.

At the time, it was reported that Neuralink Corp. had begun developing a brain implant with the purpose of helping paralyzed people walk again, blind people see again, and cure other neurological impairments.

However, twenty odd staffers (both current and former) had claimed that after receiving pressure from CEO Elon Musk, developments and experiments were accelerated, and they ended up with botched results.

Being that the tests kept failing, they were repeated over and over, thus increasing the number of animals not only being tested on, but killed.

While the full scope of the federal investigation had not yet been fully detailed, reports did confirm that the company had killed about 1,500 animals — including more than 280 sheep, pigs, and monkeys — since experience first began in 2018.

Despite the 2020 findings, it has now been revealed by Neuralink that it has received FDA approval to conduct its first study of brain implants in human beings.

On Thursday (May 25), Neuralink said that it had received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval to launch its first in-human clinical study.

The company took to its official Twitter account and wrote“We are excited to share that we have received the FDA’s approval to launch our first-in-human clinical study! This is the result of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA and represents an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people. Recruitment is not yet open for our clinical trial. We’ll announce more information on this soon!”

Since 2019, Musk has predicted on at least four occasions that his medical device company would launch human trials of his product. However, it wasn’t until early 2022, when Musk and company decided to reach out to the FDA, seeking approval.

In March 2023, employees revealed that when they did reach out last year, the agency rejected Neuralink’s application. This would make sense since there were several federal probes into the company over the animal welfare claims. However, according to the company, they’ve now been approved.
