Elon Musk And Grimes Secretly Welcomed A Second Child, A Baby Girl Who They Call “Y”

In a new Vanity Fair cover story, Grimes reveals that she has welcomed her second child with Elon Musk.

During the interview, the 33-year-old was hesitant to share the news as she explained, “I’m not at liberty to speak on these things. Whatever is going on with family stuff, I just feel like kids need to stay out of it, and X is just out there.”

However, she then revealed that she and Musk, 50, secretly welcomed a daughter they call “Y” via surrogate in December. Grimes also went on to share her full name: “Exa Dark Sideræl Musk,” she told the magazine. From there she explained the meaning behind her daughter’s name:

“Exa is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS (the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second). Dark, meanwhile, is “the unknown. People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,” Variety notes. “The pronunciation of Sideræl—“sigh-deer-ee-el”—which she calls “a more elven” spelling of sidereal, ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.’ It’s also a nod to her favorite Lord of the Rings character, the powerful Galadriel, who “chooses to abdicate the ring.”

Grimes and Musk welcomed their first child together in May 2020, a son named “X Æ A-12 Musk.” The couple later adjusted their baby’s famed name shortly after California officials noted it didn’t comply with state health codes.
